Gather and Weave
Foundations of Wild Basketry Online Course
6-Week Online Basket Weaving Course in Harvesting & Weaving Natural Materials
Have you ever wanted to gather plants from your own landscape and weave them into baskets, but weren’t sure where to begin?
Gather & Weave: Foundations of Wild Basketry is a comprehensive online basket weaving course designed for beginners who want to learn how to harvest, prepare, and weave natural materials in their own environment.
Created by educator and author of Weaving Wild Baskets, Katie Grove, this course guides you step by step through:
Essential tools and materials
Plant identification and ethical foraging
Processing and storing gathered plant materials
Foundational weaving techniques
Three essential basketry techniques (cordage, looping, and coiling)
Through live Zoom lessons, daily prompts, and a supportive community space, you’ll develop both the technical skills and the ecological awareness that define wild basketry.
Because wild basketry is more than technique. It is a practice of attention, relationship, and reciprocity. Together, we will cultivate the mindset of curiosity and open-hearted exploration while learning how to gather and weave with integrity in the landscapes we inhabit.
This course is designed for those living anywhere in the continental United States and Canada.
This course is for anyone who:
Wants to go outside and work directly with the plants around them.
Longs for a deeper relationship with the natural world.
Is self-motivated to learn basketry but desires clear structure and expert guidance.
Wants the flexibility of learning at their own pace while still being supported by a dedicated community
Has basic comfort working with their hands (tying simple knots, handling tools, shaping materials)
Has some basic familiarity with plants and a desire to deepen that knowledge.
Course Structure
This six-week online course unfolds in weekly themes, from plant identification and ethical harvesting to reciprocity and relationship with the land.
After registering, you will receive a materials packet containing wild-foraged fibers and leaves to begin our projects. You will also receive a detailed tools and supplies list, along with a welcome guide that outlines everything you need to know before the course begins.
At the beginning of each week, we’ll gather live on Zoom to learn foraging and basketry techniques, share progress, troubleshoot challenges, and deepen our connection as a learning community.
Throughout the week, you’ll practice the techniques covered in the live lesson, continue your weaving projects, and forage plants from your own landscape to use during subsequent classes.
Daily prompts will be shared in our group chat to support your practice, spark reflection, and keep you engaged with the week’s theme.
Throughout the course, I’ll be available in the group space to answer questions, offer feedback, and provide guidance as you work.

Course Syllabus
Week One: Introduction to Wild Basketry
Our first week together will focus on getting to know each other, reviewing the tools and materials you need to get started, and developing awareness of the plants growing in your immediate environment.
We will also cover the basics of making cordage using the basswood cordage included in your materials packet.
Week Two: Connecting with the Land
During week two you will head outside to deepen your relationship with the land through mapping your surroundings, sitting with the plants, and foraging materials.
We will begin making looped bags with your basswood cordage and continue working on them throughout the week.
Week Three: Looking Closer at Plants
Week three is all about basic botany and plant identification, understanding how plants change throughout the seasons, and identifying resources in your life that support learning about plants.
During our live meetup each person will share the materials they have harvested so far and we will discuss the best ways to work with them. We will begin making coiled baskets using the materials provided in your materials packet.
Week Four: Reciprocity in Basketry
What does it mean to practice reciprocity in your foraging and basketry? Week four explores ethical harvesting, responsible material use, and practical ways to cultivate care, gratitude, and reciprocity in your relationship with the plants you gather.
Our live zoom will focus on completing looped bags and sharing stories of the joys, challenges, and inspirations that have come up so far in your practice. We will also cover how to complete our looped bags.
Week Five: What It Means to Weave
Week five invites deeper reflection. What called you to wild basketry, and how is this practice changing you? This week creates space to consider the personal significance of weaving and to share what it means in your life.
Our live zoom will focus on sharing newly foraged materials and continuing to troubleshooting techniques and continuing to work on coiled baskets.
Week Six: Building Community and Completing Coiled Baskets
During our final week we go outward, considering the broader impacts that wild basketry can have in the world. Why does this work matter and how do you want to share it with others?
In our final zoom we will complete our coiled baskets and reflect on what we have learned during this six week experience together.
